Fort McClary

The Blockhouse
1844-1846年期间
"This structure, which dominates the fort site, was built during 1844-1846. The blockhouse represents a unique combination of construction materials. Its foundation is built of mortared fieldstone. The first story walls are of cut granite & the second story is built of squared logs. This structure was the last blockhouse constructed in Maine." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site

Inside The Blockhouse

The Granite Wall & Earthwork
1808-1844年
"The granite wall here was part of this site's fortification during period 1808-1844. The wall marks the location of a semicircular battery containing 9 cannons. 30 years later, this battery was modified into the board earthwork that existed today. This earthwork protected 3 large cannons when Fort McClary was garrisoned during the Spanish-American War in 1898." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site

The Granite Wall
1864-1868年
"The granite walls surrounding Fort McClary were built as part of a plan to modify the fort into a large enclosed structure with 2 tiers of cannons. Work on the plan was suspended as the Civil War ended & advancements in weapons technology made such a structure obsolete." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site

The Magazine
是当年士兵们收gun powder的地方
建立于1808年
也是当中最老的建筑物
"Solders stored gun powder in this brick building. When the magazine was built, Fort McClary also included barracks, an officer's quarters. an upper & lower battery & 10 cannons. This magazine's walls & roof were later strengthened to withstand attack from advanced weaponry." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site

The Granite Powder Magazine
1864-1868年
"This was also built as part of the fort's 1864-1868 madification plans & was designed to hold the powder for the cannons which would have been placed in the caponier nearby." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site

The Caponier
1864-1868年
"Like the unfinished granite wall surrounding Fort McClary, the 2 capeniers are part of plans to modify the fort from 1864-1868. A caponier is a work extending outside a wall that permits gunfire or cannon fire along the length of the wall." -- quoted from Fort McClary, Maine State Historic Site
